Acupuncture targets musculoskeletal pain. This therapy involves inserting fine needles into certain places on your body to stimulate healing and relieve pain. We take a holistic approach and not only do we focus on the area of your pain, but we also look for whole body health and wellbeing. That is true acupuncture therapy.

At Top Notch Bodyworks, we offer traditional Glass fire Cupping. This ancient therapy, rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), uses heat to create suction with glass cups placed on the skin, promoting circulation, easing muscle tension, and supporting the body’s natural healing response.
Glass cupping is the traditional method in TCM, known for providing superior suction, especially beneficial for mobile cupping. This method stretches tissue layers upward, creating space in the muscles and improving blood and fluid flow.
While massage uses compression strokes to relax muscles, cupping works by gently lifting the skin to enhance circulation and promote deeper muscle release. Together or on their own, they offer complementary approaches to relieving tension, improving mobility, and support overall recovery.
Cupping is not recommended for individuals taking blood thinners, those with bleeding disorders, or elderly individuals with fragile or sensitive skin.

Acupuncture promotes the release of serotonin and other beneficial chemicals in the brain, reduce stress hormone levels (cortisol, ACTH), and alleviate anxiety.
We use traditional chinese techniques which aim to reduce pain, improve movement and encourage healing. In our approach, most people feel only a gentle sensation or a slight pinch. The needles are very fine and inserted with care. Many clients find treatments calming and even fall asleep during their session.

Many people fear needles, especially when they have had a bad experience before. Here at Top Notch, our needling techniques are very gentle which is able to provide the same outcome and you hardly, if at all, will feel it.
Please wear loose clothing. Shorts are preferable to work with.
As far as possible your acupuncturist will use towels to cover you up during the treatment. You are also most welcome to bring someone with you. We have female practitioners. It is our priority to make you feel as comfortable as possible. If you feel at all uncomfortable with the extent to which you are asked to undress, or any aspect of the treatment or examination please let us know. We will always respect requests for modesty and can work within your personal preference. Should you feel more comfortable in the presence of a friend or relative, this is also possible.
Initial treatment will take approximately 60 minutes. The acupuncturist treats one patient at a time, and is in the room with the patient for the duration of the treatment session. In the session, we take a full case history and perform any physical, orthopaedic or neurological examinations that may be necessary in order to reach an accurate diagnosis.
Any further treatment is between 30-35 minutes. In this consultation, the acupunturist will deliver treatment as needed, offer a management place, ongoing advice and support, and assess the improvement of the condition.
Acute issues may resolve within 4–6 sessions, while chronic or complex conditions may benefit from a longer treatment plan.
Those whom are disabled or require assistance or are under the age of 16 must have a parent, guardian or caregiver present throughout the entire treatment.
Many people feel good after, experiencing some amount pain relief in an area that was painful. Usually the treatment given continues to have an effect over a few days. This is why we will often encourage you to ‘take it easy’ and rest after a treatment. It will allow your body the necessary time to heal properly, even if you feel completely pain free.
It is not uncommon after any physical therapy, including acupuncture care, to continue to experience some symptoms or even feel sore or tired. Sometimes the symptoms may become worse before they become better usually in the first 24-48 hours
A post treatment reaction is the term for the achy or uncomfortable sensation that can occur after treatment. Should you feel a bit sore and achy after your treatment, this feeling should ease within a couple of days. This occurs due to your body adjusting to the changes that may have been made through treatment.
If you feel concerned, or your pain is significantly worse, then you should call and speak with your acupuncturist. We would always prefer that you call us to let us know how you feel. We will often be able to tell you what to do or not to do that can help relieve the irritations you are feeling. In some cases we may even decide it is something separate from the treatment and may need further attention by either your practitioner or a referral to further investigate.
What to do if you suffer from a post treatment reaction
Acupuncture at Top Notch, depending on your condition, may prescribe the use of a heat pack, cold pack, some stretching, exercises, rest or over-the-counter analgesic and anti-inflammatory medications to support the treatment. Following the advice you have been given should help your condition recover faster. If you are unsure or you think it is not supporting your recovery please call your Acupuncturist to discuss and clarify what they have advised.
Acupuncture is mostly hands-on treatment that may include needling, massage, stretching, repetitive movements, red light therapy, heat through moxi and glass cupping.
Most acupuncture treatments are gentle and should not cause undue discomfort. If your injuries do require hands-on treatment of painful and tender areas, your acupunturist will aim to make you as comfortable as possible.
There are techniques which may cause some short term discomfort or pain. You may experience mild soreness for a day or two after treatment, similar to that felt after mild exercise. If this soreness persists or increases significantly, please do not hesitate to contact your acupuncturist to discuss your concerns.
If your injury is work-related, please let your acupuncturist know. Your injury may be approved through your work rather than ACC. Please ensure you contact your employer to see if you qualify for this cover. If you are not sure, we can submit and ACC will inform us that your workplace will cover up to a certain amount of treatments.
